6 Reasons Why Kevin Durant’s MVP Acceptance Speech Is So Important

Originally, I wanted to post this on Mother’s Day but I just moved into a new apartment and didn’t have internet access. I know, I know first world problems. I’m not a huge sports fan by any means so anyone who keeps up with NBA basketball most likely watched the Oklahoma City Thunder star, Kevin Durant give his heartwarming MVP acceptance award speech. If you didn’t, stop cheating yourself and watch it here.

Thanks to YouTube I’ve been able to watch it over and over again and each time I take away something different from his spiel. Whether you enjoy basketball or not, everyone should take the 26+ minutes out of their day to listen to Durant’s inspiring words. As I stated before, there are so many key points that you can take away from it and I’ve chosen my top 6 to share with you.

  1. You are never too old to keep getting better at your craft, because there is always something new to learn.
  2. Always let people know what they mean to you and how much they’ve inspired and helped you, because if they are doing it selflessly then they don’t truly know the extend of it.
  3. Never forget where you came from and stay humble and appreciative everything during all the highs and lows that occur throughout life.
  4. Remember that it’s never just all about you, decisions that you make also affect other people.
  5. Be there for other people with your whole heart, whether it’s a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen, a voice to motivate, or a mind to inspire.
  6. It’s so important to surround yourself with people who truly support you and want to see you succeed. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve seen how people can be the “devil in disguise” to your life. If you feel that someone doesn’t really care about you or that they’re just using you to benefit themselves, then it’s perfectly okay to cut them out of your life.

Lastly, at the end of his speech Durant’s final gratitude is to his mother, which ties perfectly into the Mother’s Day theme. If you don’t feel like watching the entire video then you can just watch that part here, but it’s so beautiful how Durant deems his mother as the real MVP.

Growing up I never understand why my mom wouldn’t let me do certain things or said no when I wanted to go to certain places or hang out with certain people, but now it all makes sense. I can now fully appreciate how much she sacrificed for my siblings and I. Mothers should be celebrated everyday, so after reading this let your mother know how much you love her.

Thank you for reading and stay hungry to learn, create and grow!
