10 Ways to Get Over Someone

The most romantic National holiday, Valentine’s Day is approaching. Half of us use it as a day to express how much we love and care for one another, while others use it as a day to eat chocolate and sulk.

Whichever way you choose to celebrate this year, we all eventually deal with the bitter end. It’s going to hurt and you’re going to shed some tears, but when it’s all said and done you will rise again like a phoenix from the ashes.

Here are 10 way to get over someone that have guided me to inner peace throughout the years.

1. Allow yourself to feel every emotion and acknowledge that you are hurting

The worst thing you can do for yourself is hold it in and pretend like you’re not bothered. Eventually you’re going to have a mental breakdown and be forced to deal with it. Make the process shorter by saying yes, I am hurting and start the grieving.

2. Do not go through old texts, photos or stalk them on social media

If you’re constantly trying to relive in the past then you will never get over someone. No shame in deleting or blocking someone if that’s what you need to do. It’s a waste of time to make yourself upset if you see the other person having fun or with someone new.

3. Get rid of things that remind you of that person and the times you had

This could be anything physical such as letters, stuffed animals, clothing, etc. It’s true when they say out of sight, out of mind.

4. Change your look and do something you’ve always wanted to try but was too scared

This could be as simple as experimenting with new pieces in your wardrobe or cook yourself a meal from scratch. This could be the catalyst you need to find yourself again.

5. Say yes to opportunities to get out of your room and distract yourself

When you’re sad the easiest thing to do is lay in bed and self-loath, but do yourself a favor and say yes when friends invite you places. You’ll be having so much fun that you’ll soon realize there is life after the break-up.

6. Be open to meeting new people

There’s no point in going out if you’re not going to be open to meeting new people. Let someone buy you a drink, ask people about themselves and exchange numbers if you hit it off with someone. There’s no harm in hanging out a few times, it doesn’t have to mean anything if you’re not ready yet.

7. Spent time doing something that makes you happy

It’s common for people to realize that they’ve lost pieces of themselves when reflecting on past relationships. You can attempt to restore yourself again by doing things you once loved such as dancing or volunteering. If you haven’t found it yet then use the time to figure out what truly makes you happy.

8. Let yourself cry a few times then after tell yourself that you’re better than that

You shouldn’t be afraid to cry and let it all out. Scream into pillows and once you’re done, decide that they no longer have that hold on you. Release them.

9. Stop trying to “run into them” and avoid places you know you’ll see them

This goes back to out of sight, out of mind concept, so if you’re trying to see them then you’re hindering yourself from moving on. Also a few wrong moves and you may get labeled as a stalker if you magically appear everywhere they are (yikes).

10. Talk it out with people you trust to release everything

Be sure to have heart-to-hearts about the situation and how you’re feeling with people that you trust. Talking things out helps you figure out where your head is and it gives the people close to you a better understanding of how they can further help you through this.
