SZA Ctrl Album Illustrations

SZA’s debut album CTRL was released a little over a month ago and if you know what good music is then I’m sure you’ve listened to it.

My favorite top 3 tracks off the album are Go Gina, Drew Barrymore and Supermodel, but let’s be real.. the whole album is so good!

Everything about CTRL was pure magic and every time I listen to it, I feel like I’m being revitalized.

It’s pretty rare for me to be able to listen to an artist’s album from start to finish without skipping, so I wanted to do something special inspired by CTRL.

I decided to create an illustration for each song off the album. Yup, that means 14 lil’ illustrations.

The process of brainstorming was fun, because it required me to listen to each line in the songs and watch tons of SZA interviews in order to created images that I felt best represented each song.

Some of them came to me really easy like the one for Broken Clocks, Supermodel and Normal Girl. Some of the harder ones included Pretty Little Birds, Prom, and Garden (Say It Like Dat).

If you follow me on Instagram then you were able to see the images as they were released into the world.

But no worries, because here are all 14 illustrations in their full colorful glory and available for prints and on other home goods through Society6!

All the images were first hand drawn and outlined with a .01 Pigma Micron Ink Pen, they’re my favorite for outlining and come in different colors and line widths.

Here’s what they looked like before all the additions!

I used Adobe Illustrator to turn them into vectors and clean up any lines to make them look smoother but still hand drawn.

Any images that had small details were drawn separately and resized later to fit, as you can see on the one for Love Galore.

On average, they took me about 2 hours to make from concept, to drawing, to finished illustration and I honestly had a lot of fun with this personal project.

Hmm what album should I do next?

If you love any of the designs, you’ll love them even more printed on every day items, so be sure to peek at my Society6 for prints, tote bags, rugs and more!

“I could be your supermodel if you believe
if you see it in me, see it in me, see it in me
I don’t see myself”

Love Galore

“Why you bother me when you know you don’t want me?
Why you bother me when you know you got a women?
Why you hit me when you know you know better?”

Doves in the Wind

“Sit back and relax your mind, just ride, just ride
Sit back and relax, you’ll find just why, just why
Sit back, relax, just ease your mind, just ride”

Drew Barrymore

“Somebody get the tacos, somebody spark the blunt”
“Bring the gin, got the juice”

“Fearin’ not growin’ up
Keepin’ me up at night
Am I doin’ enough?
Feel like I’m wastin’ time”

The Weekend

“You’re like 9 to 5, I’m the weekend
Make him lose his mind every weekend
You take Wednesday, Thursday
Then just send him my way
Think I got it covered for the weekend”

Go Gina

“I’ve been on the low key grinding
Learning on the low key, shining
Tryin’ to keep to myself
But you bring me out of character
Every time again”

Garden (Say It Like Dat)

“You’ll never love me but I believe you when you say it like that”

Broken Clocks

“All I got is these broken clocks
I ain’t got no time
Just burning daylight”

“Down for the ride, down for the ride
You could take me anywhere”

Wavy (Interlude)

“I’ve been in the dugout
Lookin’ for a way out
You know just takin’ it slow
Now I’m feelin’ one out
Lookin’ for a way out
Somebody show me the door”

Normal Girl

“I wanna be the type of girl you take home to your mama
The type of girl, I know your fellas would be proud of”

Pretty Little Birds

“Pretty little bird
You still ain’t scared of no heights
When the spiral down feels as good as the flight
When hating you feels good for the night
When the morning comes I hope you’re still mine”

20 Something

“How could it be?
20 something, all alone still
Not a thing in my name
Ain’t got nothing’, runnin’ from love
Only know fear”

Which one was your favorite? Mine is the one for Anything or Broken Clocks.
