Brunswick Heads is another town outside of Byron Bay that is definitely worth a visit. The first three days of my trip were spent in Byron Bay that you can read all about here.
The Airbnb I was staying at was actually in Ocean Shores which is right outside of Brunswick Heads. I arrived after the sun had set since I was coming from Nimbin where I had spent a few hours exploring. Click here to see all my pics from Nimbin.
Staying at Airbnb in Ocean Shores
Since it was dark I couldn’t see much, but the next day I made sure to take lots of pictures of the space. After getting settled, I showered and went on the hunt for dinner.
I drove about 5 minutes out and across the street from a shopping center there was a local wood fired pizza pop up going on. I ended up ordering a margarita pizza and enjoyed it from the comfort of my car.
Later that evening, my hosts invited me to their jam band practice. It was three old guys playing a variety of instruments in the living room such as the ukulele, bass guitar, keyboard, flute, wind chimes, and electric guitar and covering different songs. The whole ordeal was so innocent and pure and they sounded really good too. After the free entertainment, I went to bed to rest up for my adventurous day ahead.
In the morning, I got a few really nice photos of the Airbnb. My favorite part was definitely the large balcony, nice view and all the light that comes through the windows during the day.
Breakfast at Old Maids Burger Store
After getting ready for the day I drove to Brunswick Heads to spend some time at the beach. I was craving a smoothie bowl so I stopped by Old Maids Burger Store to pick up breakfast. The interior of Old Maids is so aesthetically pleasing with lots of neutral colors and plants. I ordered the Sunny smoothie bowl which was made with passion fruit, mango and banana and enjoyed it while sitting right at the beach.
Exploring Brunswick Heads
There is a good amount of little shops walking distance from the beach so I after I was done eating, I went and did a bit of window shopping. The stores ranged from vintage shops, local boutiques, and novelty shops so it was interesting to look around and waste time.
My impression of Brunswick Heads is that it’s such a nice little town. Truly the perfect getaway if you just want to wind down. In addition to shopping, there are great food and live music options.
Day trip to Mullumbimby
Later in the afternoon I headed to Mullumbimby which is only a 10 minute drive from Brunswick Heads. Mullumbimby is another recommended town to visit in New South Wales because of its small town charm.
The palm trees lining the street gave me that calm coastal vibe while the architecture reminded me of New Orleans a little bit.
There’s one main road where a lot of the shops are and most of them are clothing, thrift or home decor stores. I went on a Sunday around 3 p.m. so a majority of the shops were closed. If you plan on visiting, I’d recommend checking the store times before you go if you plan on shopping.
Experiencing Kiva Spa
Since most of the shops were closed, I spent the rest of my time in Mullumbimby at the Kiva Spa. Kiva Spa is a fabulous day spa with a very tranquil rain forest setting. Along with massages and facials for purchase, there is a bathhouse that you can enjoy for 1 hour for only $25. The bathhouse includes 4 hydrotherapy hot spas, a wood fired sauna, steam room, and a relaxation area with complimentary tea.
I absolutely loved my experience at the Kiva Spa. The staff was helpful and the entire space felt very clean. Although, there wasn’t a huge amount of space to roam, I still felt very relaxed. My favorite part was without a doubt the wood fired sauna. The sauna was in this small dome shaped room that you have to crouch down in order to get inside through the little door. An hour didn’t feel long enough, but I still had a really lovely time soaking in all the magic.
Sunset at Brunswick Heads Main Beach
Whenever I’m traveling, I make a huge effort to catch the sunset because why not? The sun was setting when I left Kiva Spa so I headed straight to the Main Beach to catch it. The sun was setting over the mountains and it was really hard to find a high vantage point. Regardless, the sunset from the beach was still really nice. The colors were a mix of pink, purple and orange which always makes for a nice sunset.
Dinner at Old Main Burger Store
Later for dinner, I headed back to Old Main to try one of their burgers. Instead of taking away, I ate inside and ordered the classic burger. It definitely tasted healthier than your classic American style burger but I still enjoyed it. Also, the fries were nice and they allow you to order a half size which is just enough for me.
The sun had long set once I finished my burger so I headed back to my Airbnb to have one last good sleep before heading to the Gold Coast.
